Why does my pet need bloodwork?

1. Even if your pet looks healthy they may still have underlying issues that can only be detected via blood sampling. Symptoms may not show up until the condition is advanced.
2. To diagnose an illness. When your pet is showing obvious signs of sickness, a blood test can diagnose anemia, infections, dehydration, kidney disease and the responsiveness of their immune system.
3. Your pet has an upcoming operation. Screening their blood before surgery tells our veterinarians how much anesthesia to use during the procedure. Your pet’s blood work can also show their blood clotting ability which is important.
4. Your pet is a senior. Older pets are more prone to illness and regular bloodwork can catch diseases in the early stages where they are easier to treat and manage.

What are some signs that my pet needs bloodwork done?

Your pet may experience various symptoms that require a blood test to diagnose. Some of these symptoms include:

• Weight loss
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Increased thirst or urination

Why does my pet need to fast before having bloodwork done?

We ask that pets fast for 8 hours before having bloodwork done to ensure the results aren’t affected. Some foods, particularly fatty ones, can enter the bloodstream which means your pet will need to come back for retesting. Sometimes a veterinarian may perform an unplanned blood test and may still get a good blood sample.

How is blood taken from my pet?

The process works very similarly to that of humans. A veterinarian or a technician inserts a small needle into the vein on your pet’s leg or neck.
