Spaying and Neutering

Spaying and neutering are medical procedures that remove your pet’s reproductive organs. There are many benefits for your pet if they have the surgery. Mainly, it stops your furry pal from having unwanted litters, which reduces strays and overpopulation in humane shelters. Some other benefits of the surgeries are that they prevent prostate cancer and uterine infections, as many pets who don’t have the surgery later develop these illnesses. These procedures also eliminate bad behaviours such as aggression, humping or spraying to mark territory.

What are spaying and neutering?

Both are surgical procedures that prevent pets from reproducing. Neutering is performed on males and it removes the testicles. Spaying removes the ovaries and uterus thus preventing females from mothering puppies/kittens.

When should I spay or neuter my pet?

At our hospital, we recommend that pets be spayed or neutered when they are 6-months-old. On average this is around the time when most pets begin the heat cycle, where they want to reproduce. Can my older pet be spayed or neutered?

Absolutely! Pets as old as 7-years-old can be spayed or neutered as long as they are healthy. Since the procedures require anesthesia, your pet must be checked before to ensure that they can recover from the surgery. We want to keep your pet safe, so our team will run blood tests to determine if there are any underlying issues that could affect their recovery.
