It’s a sad reality that many pets are overweight or obese. As their guardian, you’re in charge of your pet’s health which includes their weight. Problems with weight can also go the other way when pets are underweight, which is sometimes identifiable by visible bones protruding under the skin with little or no fat in between. To determine the ideal weight for your pet, our doctors consider their age, breed and size. What happens when my pet is overweight?

When your loyal companion does not have a balanced lifestyle, this makes it difficult for their organs to function. When the organs are not functioning properly, your pet could become ill with conditions such as:

• Diabetes
• Arthritis
• Urinary bladder issues
• Heart disease

How can I control my pet’s weight?

1. Encourage them to play more. This will help them burn off calories and build muscle.
2. Limit their unhealthy treats. Treats and snacks should take up no more than 10% of your pet’s daily food intake.
3. Schedule their mealtimes. This trains them to eat less frequently, by leaving out food they are more likely to overeat since the food is available at all times.
4. Follow the special diet created by your veterinarian. Our doctors may switch out unhealthy foods for more balanced ones with fiber, protein and antioxidants.
